Spotlight: Fear of God Seventh Collection

Fear of God “The Seventh Collection”

Fear of God “The Seventh Collection”

Designer: Jerry Lorenzo

There’s no denying my infatuation with the Fear of God brand. Religion has played a significant role in my life and I admire Jerry on his tactile approach to share the gospel. “The Seventh Collection” is noteworthy due to its religious context and the significance of the number 7. Biblical references note “7” as the number of completeness and perfection. The collection, as noted by the brand, offers “an immovable narrative, rooted in perpetuity and unbound by time.”

Not only does Jerry reference the number 7 throughout the collection in various forms, he uses the number as a backdrop in conjunction for social change. The Negro League inspired pieces reference the time in sports culture where black baseball players were not allowed to join major clubs. The organization (founded in 1920) was the launching pad for the most influential Black athletes including Jackie Robinson and Willie Mays. The fusion of history and reality, the past and the present, make this collection one of the most impactful and timely collections that Fear of God has debuted.

Jerry found success in leveraging classic textures and presenting them in modern silhouettes. This, coupled with the subtle message of black pride and empowerment, to me, is Jerry’s tribute to “The American Dream.” The juxtaposition of muted tones should not be overlooked. It’s symbolic in stating that the voices of today will not be silenced and that history and pride are to be preserved in order to build a more sustainable future.
